SUMMARY:
The Nursing Assistant assists the patients in performing activities of daily living, provides a clean and safe living environment, gathers data on the resident’s physical and emotional states and reports observations to the nurse in charge. The Nursing Assistant provides nursing care to patients in simple nursing situations under the supervision of the head nurse.
RESPONSIBILITIES/ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1. Supports the mission and philosophy of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
2. Reports observations of patients’ conditions or activities to charge nurse accurately and on a timely basis.
3. Provides highest level of care appropriate to the patients’ needs – emotional, physical, social and spiritual.
4. Assists the patients with activities of daily living to include proper bathing, grooming techniques and feeding. Makes beds properly and changes linens as necessary.
5. Uses proper techniques and follows procedures for the lifting and transporting of patients. Encourages proper use of equipment and supplies to ensure the safety of self, coworkers and patients.
6. Works with and assists Charge Nurse, Registered Nurse or LPN to formulate and implement care plans.
7. Assists in providing a safe, clean and orderly environment and constantly uses procedures which employ safe techniques.
8. Consistently displays environmental awareness by ensuring the orderliness and cleanliness of Sisters’ rooms, treatment areas and nursing work areas.
9. Maintains confidentiality of patients’ information and upholds patients’ rights at all times.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assists the Director of Nursing/Charge Nurse with various administrative tasks as needed.
2. Performs tasks which support the essential functions of the job. These tasks may be altered or redesigned depending upon individual circumstances.
3. Attends in-service meetings to upgrade nursing skills.
4. Acts as a team member by developing a cooperative team effort and covering for peers during vacations/other times when needed.
5. Assists in the orientation of new personnel and teaches them established procedures to assure continuity of care.
6. And other duties as assigned by the Director of Nursing/Charge Nurse.
JOB SKILLS/POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
1. Ability to cope with the physical, mental and emotional stress of the position.
2. Ability to deal tactfully with Sisters, personnel, family members, friends and the general public.
3. Successful completion of high school or equivalent. Reading, writing, grammar, and mathematics skills. PA state approved certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant or eligibility for this test.
4. Three month prior nursing assistant experience, preferably in long term care institutions.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
1. Physical activity such as walking, standing, sitting, pulling, lifting, carrying, pushing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, twisting and supporting patients.
2. Exposure to viruses, disease and infection from patients and specimens.
3. Extended periods of work time scheduled according to operational needs.
4. Traumatic situations involving patients who are emotionally disturbed, terminally ill and dying.
